When you don’t need your husband, but you still want him

June 11, 2018 by Janis 1 Comment

Growing up with two brothers, and practical and pragmatic parents, I learned from an early age that I could do anything my brothers could. I built my own treehouse, made a go-kart, played with dolls, and got muddy along with the rest of them. I learned I was in charge of my own destiny, and … [Read more…]

Colin’s right arm started moving one week before Christmas last year. Since then, he has been working really hard on strengthening it. He is trying to write again with his right hand, but doesn’t have the wrist control. It is possible to write with gross movement, but we are hoping for return and control of … [Read more…]

Unexpected and positive side effects of spinal cord injury

March 18, 2018 by Janis 1 Comment

It was the C5 vertebra that was dislocated almost to the point of complete separation in Colin’s neck as his car was hit from behind, spun over, flipped and landed on its roof. At that moment, he felt his entire body go limp and knew he wasn’t going to walk away from this. In the … [Read more…]

March 3, 2018 by Janis 3 Comments

OT and physio this week, as well as a well-earned burger from Rocomama – where Colin has wanted to go for ages now. Colin’s right arm has just suddenly started working since just before Christmas, and continues to gain strength. No more hand straps

February 9, 2018 by Janis 3 Comments

Just in the last week, Colin’s hand function is such that he was able to use his traditional Gilette razor instead of the electric one he has been using. Initially, he was not able to hold the electric one, and I used to shave him. Then he was able to hold it himself and shave … [Read more…]

First movie since the accident

January 6, 2018 by Janis 2 Comments

We went to see Star Wars today. It is the first movie we have been to since Colin’s accident. My Dad came with us – since he is the person responsible for my proper education of seeing Star Wars in 1976 and every other time since. It was also in 3D which is cool. Jabu … [Read more…]

Merry Christmas

December 24, 2017 by Janis 2 Comments

It is that time of year again – Christmas Eve, and we have had a long year. I look back with some sadness, lots of gratitude, and thanks for every person who has stood alongside us this year. Without the support structure I am privileged to have, this would have been a different year. In … [Read more…]

Morning routine abilities

December 17, 2017 by Janis 1 Comment

I have said it before, and I will say it again – I am not surprised, but I continue to be amazed at Colin’s progress and tenacity. He is just determined to make the best of the situation, and find alternative ways to do what he wants to be able to do. In the mornings, … [Read more…]
