Technique: Faux Tiger’s Eye
Win: No
Challenge:
- To create a faux Tiger’s Eye slab
Lessons Learned:
- Everything was going well until I added gold mica powder to the surface and the layers underneath almost completely disappeared
- Although the end result is still pretty, it does not resemble the Tiger’s Eye effect I was aiming for
- I discovered that the silver and gold mica powders I currently own are far too opaque, even when applied in a very light dusting
- This experiment showed me how quickly surface treatments can overpower depth and translucency in faux stone techniques
- I need to invest in softer, more transparent mica powders for future attempts
- I did not finish setting these pieces as I was not satisfied with how they came out
- A tiny studio gremlin somewhere clearly yelled “plot twist” the moment the gold mica appeared
Confidence Level: 7/10
