Day 69 – 100 Days of Polymer Clay

Technique: Faux Tiger’s Eye
Win: No

Challenge:

  • To create a faux Tiger’s Eye slab

Lessons Learned:

  • Everything was going well until I added gold mica powder to the surface and the layers underneath almost completely disappeared
  • Although the end result is still pretty, it does not resemble the Tiger’s Eye effect I was aiming for
  • I discovered that the silver and gold mica powders I currently own are far too opaque, even when applied in a very light dusting
  • This experiment showed me how quickly surface treatments can overpower depth and translucency in faux stone techniques
  • I need to invest in softer, more transparent mica powders for future attempts
  • I did not finish setting these pieces as I was not satisfied with how they came out
  • A tiny studio gremlin somewhere clearly yelled “plot twist” the moment the gold mica appeared

Confidence Level: 7/10
