Technique: Pendant with cracked red “gold” leaf
Win: Yes
Challenge:
- To apply red metallic leaf over black clay and stretch it to create a uniform cracked effect
- To layer multiple components together into a larger pendant design
Lessons Learned:
- This remains one of my favourite techniques because it creates a striking, eye-catching finish with relatively little effort
- Experimenting with different colours of metallic leaf is always exciting, as each one produces a unique effect against the clay beneath
- Careful stretching helps create a more even crackle pattern across the surface
- Layering elements can add depth and interest while still allowing the crackled finish to remain the focal point
Confidence Level: 9/10
Notes:
- I still need to improve the placement of the hanging hole so that it is perfectly centred at the top of the pendant.
- I absolutely love this finish and can see myself wearing this piece often.
- The contrast between the red metallic leaf and the black clay creates a rich, dramatic look that really appeals to me.
