Technique: Makume Gane pendant and matching earrings
Win: Yes
Challenge:
• To use green, yellow, and orange to create a Makume Gane slab for a pendant and matching earrings
• To explore a new construction technique by making a round pendant split into sections and joined with jump rings
• To create a double-sided pendant by reusing cut slab pieces on the back so the pattern appears continuous throughout
Lessons Learned:
• The colour interactions created beautiful depth — in some areas it looks as though black ink has softly bled into the surface
• The Makume Gane effect continues to produce unexpected and organic patterns, ranging from dragon scale-like textures to camouflage-style blends
• Constructing a two-sided piece requires careful planning, but adds a more finished and intentional feel to the final design
Confidence Level: 8/10
Notes:
• This piece feels more expressive and bold, with strong visual texture and movement
• The split pendant design introduces a new sense of structure and interaction within the piece
• A good balance between control and unpredictability — something to continue exploring in future designs
