Technique: Translucent clay with pink “gold” leaf dangle earrings
Win: Yes
Challenge:
- To create thin pieces of translucent clay with stretched pink “gold” leaf
- To roll those circles into hollow half-bicone shapes
- To layer them together into a free-dangling earring design
Lessons Learned:
- I really love the effect of translucent clay. It has a soft, glowing quality that feels very different from solid colours, although it is definitely more difficult to work with
- Rolling the clay very thin creates a beautiful transparency, but there is a delicate balance between “thin and elegant” and “too thin to hold together”
- The thin translucent clay has a tendency to crack slightly around the edges, which makes achieving perfectly smooth finishes more challenging
- That said, the slightly organic edges also give the earrings a handmade, almost petal-like quality that I quite enjoy
- I think this is a technique that will improve significantly with more practice and a better understanding of the clay’s limits
Confidence Level: 8/10
