Technique: Gold leaf earrings
Win: Yes
Challenge:
- Today was all about experimenting with finishes
Lessons Learned:
- I created two different sets of earrings using faux gold leaf, but finished them differently to compare the final effect. One pair was sealed with varnish, and the other with resin.
- It was actually really interesting seeing the difference side by side.
- The old Sculpey varnish I have from years ago still works surprisingly well and gives a beautiful soft satin finish. For pieces that don’t already have much shine, I think it still has a definite place in my toolkit.
- But for highly reflective finishes like faux gold leaf, the resin definitely wins. It creates a much clearer, glossier surface and really enhances the metallic effect instead of softening it.
- I love these kinds of comparison experiments because they help me understand not just what works, but why certain finishes suit certain styles better.
