Day 87 – 100 Days of Polymer Clay

Technique: Faux hammered metal earrings

Win: Not yet

Today’s challenge was to create a round pair of earrings using split colours with a faux hammered metal centre. I used silver flakes to create the metallic effect, and then pressed the surface to imitate hammered metal texture.

The technical side worked fairly well, but composition-wise I’m not convinced I found the balance yet.

I intentionally wanted the circles to feel asymmetrical, with uneven amounts of colour on each side, because I love designs that feel organic and slightly unexpected. The problem is that there’s a very fine line between “interestingly uneven” and “visually unbalanced”… and I think these drifted a little too far into the second category.

That said, I learned something valuable today:
split-colour designs clearly have a sweet spot. Too symmetrical can feel static, but too uneven can feel accidental rather than intentional. I think this is one of those things that only develops through repetition and experimentation.

The faux hammered texture itself has a lot of potential though. The silver flakes catch the light beautifully, and I can definitely see myself revisiting this technique again with different proportions and layouts.

You can also see in the images that the varnish has made it look like there are “bald” spots in the metal. Hopefully when it dries it will all be metallic.

Confidence Level: 7/10
